Court to COJ: Pay Back Illegal Filing Fee to Candidate
Jul 01, 2008 - 10:22 PM - by Jimmy
Looks like I get to break a little news... This one you'll have to reach back to remember. It was the heat of the 2007 COJ municipal elections. Some of us who were running were also litigating the City's ass off over illegal, unconstitutional local elections ordinances. We won then and today, one of us won again.

My friend Linda Storey prevailed in her case concerning the amount local candidates were charged as a filing fee to qualify for the ballot. What I can tell you is... [Read More]

RS&H has had the JAA contract exclusively for at least 11 yrs I'm told. Ditto for a construction company. Anyone want to guess how they continually win the bids?
The dirty side of Jacksonville dealings. Cost $800,000.00 just for starters
Jun 18, 2008 - 7:48 PM - by Diane Melendez
I have started this thread to take you through a journey that I hope will get you thinking. I know it will make you angry.

We often find ourselves in shock and at a loss for words when we find out the ugly truth behind so many deals in Jacksonville. This one is no exception. But I think as we wade through this outrage you will see how the players in and attached to City Hall get away with so much. It is nearly impossible for the average citizen to keep up with those who... [Read More]
Cindy Laquidara responsible for $200,000.00 paid to council lawyers
Jun 18, 2008 - 6:18 PM - by Diane Melendez
We are all painfully aware of the fact that some current and former members of Jacksonville's City Council have seen fit to pass on legal expenses "they incurred" after hiring attorneys to represent themselves during a Grand Jury investigation These billings cost the taxpayers well over $200,000.00 at a time when we are scrambling for funds to meet basic services

As has been recorded many times, the costs were ridiculous. Here they are again:

Warren... [Read More]

Let The Voters Have Their Say
Jun 25, 2008 - 6:00 AM - by rpschutt
From a piece sent to the Times-Union:

Quote:
Our local Republican parties should be ashamed of themselves. They have, once again, relied on an arcane tactic to deny over 89,000 voters the right to vote on their Representative to the Florida House.

Florida is Failing Future Generations
Jun 21, 2008 - 4:14 AM - by rpschutt
Once again, Florida voters have failed themselves, their children, their grandchildren and the generations to come. It's a scenario that is altogether too common every two years, and yesterday, it happened again.

Nearly 25% of the State Legislature was elected yesterday.

In June.

Not November.

In a state of over 18 million people, where more than 3.3 million people cast votes in the 2006 elections, dozens of lawmakers skated back to... [Read More]
Correspondence in the Sunshine
Jun 03, 2008 - 1:30 AM - by rpschutt
Susie Wiles gets it.

Council Members Glorious Johnson, Kevin Hyde and Daniel Davis get it.

They are among the few.

Almost a decade into the new century, Jacksonville City Government has shown an unwillingness to fully embrace the concept of “open government.” The City’s website continues to be limited in the scope of information provided, with citizens unable to view documents and amendments that accompany legislation pending before the City Council... Council in the Sunshine
May 21, 2008 - 9:12 PM - by rpschutt
The Grand Jury report recently released by the State Attorney’s Office on Sunshine Law violations and City Contract Policy Violations left a lot of Jacksonville voters wondering exactly when, if ever, our local government will be held to some measure of accountability.

While the members of the Grand Jury quite obviously devoted a tremendous amount of time to studying the various accusations, one has to wonder if their time was actually spent in vain, especially considering... [Read More]
