The kennels are full of abandoned dogs. All hoping someone will rescue them before it's too late. Scott Trebatoski, Division Chief at Jacksonville Animal Care and Control says, many of the sad eyes belong to dogs battling a silent killer. "I'd say about 1/3 of the dogs we get in here are heart worm positive."
The dogs were once treated for heartworm, but with funding cuts it's become impossible. "It's sometimes hard to give that much money to one animal when it could save ten more." Volunteer, Jill Mero, says that means many dogs might not make it. "This is just another black mark against these dogs that really need a second chance."
She hopes she can help save these animals, and is asking for your help. "As volunteers we set-up an account. We're asking for donations so we can get heart worm positive dogs a better chance of being adopted." The money will go to fund treatment for adopted animals. "We don't care if it's $5, $10, $20. Then if someone wants to adopt a dog and can't because they can't afford heart worm treatment ,the volunteers will step in, and make sure the dog is treated. The dog can get out of the shelter and into a home."
The group has set up an account at VyStar under the name "Friends of Jacksonville Animal Care and Control" the account number is: 7502070437.
