The kennels are full of abandoned dogs. All hoping someone will rescue them before it's too late. Scott Trebatoski, Division Chief at Jacksonville Animal Care and Control says, many of the sad eyes belong to dogs battling a silent killer. "I'd say about 1/3 of the dogs we get in here are heart worm positive."

The dogs were once treated for heartworm, but with funding cuts it's become impossible. "It's sometimes hard to give that much money to one animal when it could save ten more." Volunteer, Jill Mero, says that means many dogs might not make it. "This is just another black mark against these dogs that really need a second chance."

She hopes she can help save these animals, and is asking for your help. "As volunteers we set-up an account. We're asking for donations so we can get heart worm positive dogs a better chance of being adopted." The money will go to fund treatment for adopted animals. "We don't care if it's $5, $10, $20. Then if someone wants to adopt a dog and can't because they can't afford heart worm treatment ,the volunteers will step in, and make sure the dog is treated. The dog can get out of the shelter and into a home."

The group has set up an account at VyStar under the name "Friends of Jacksonville Animal Care and Control" the account number is: 7502070437.

My heart aches with these stories Joan. Spaying and neutering is the answer in many cases. Closing down thoughtless backyard breeders and puppy mills is the other horrible cause and that one needs to be dealt with. People don't need to get pets if they do not want to commit to the years of caring for them properly. The skanks who breed animals without any care for their condition and quality of life need to be stopped. When folks do get dogs or cats, they need to neuter them. These are creatures bred to be dependent upon people and it is heartless for people to discard them. If they have a pet and can't keep it for any reason, then the owner needs to make sure it is properly placed.

On a different topic. Joan, I am so proud of what you did to help that poor dog over the weekend. You went to the lengths it took to get him out of that cage. I hope the idiot who put him there gets it now. I wonder if animal control will follow up with the owner to make sure he keeps the dog sheltered with food and water? Is there a way for us to find out? That guy is a major jerk. You did such a good thing Joan. Great job lady.

Thanks for the post, please everyone forward this information to everyone you know!
There needs to be constant awareness for these shelters. I have talked to many many people who have no idea where any shelters are, they are animal lovers and have lived here all their lives.
If anyone could contact a TV station, that would be the way to get in everyone's face, it always is.
Please help if you can!!!

I will send this out to everyone that I know. I am a believer in pet adoptions. I currently have 3 shelter animals and 1 stray. I will also stop by and give a donation this week and make sure that friends and family know about this. Thanks for the post.

If you go to the corner of Margaret St. and Forest St. just around the corner from the credit union on Park St. you can see the nearly completed new facility for Animal Care and Control. This is going to be a huge improvement over the current location and more centrally located for anyone looking to adopt.

Adopting a shelter animal is good for your karma, folks.
