Agreed, Obama inherited a REAL MESS!
What has he done, (big picture here..ok?), about it?
He has made it MUCH, MUCH WORSE and he continues to make it worse everyday.
The government made a HUGE mistake with the "bailouts". In a capitalistic economic system, bad decisions, corrupt decisions, whatever, have consequences. Among those consequences are GOING OUT OF BUSINESS and lots of people losing their jobs.
Sorry, a fact of life in the "real world"!
The peoples' angst would have been directed against those responsible for the companies failing. But instead, now they clamor for more government money, (OUR tax money), to save their jobs and businesses that made crappy business decisions.
Private businesses pay unemployment insurance to cover unemployment payments.
When that money runs out...it's OUT!
Adding tax money, (again OUR money), to extend those benefits makes it morph into just another "government entitlement program". Like we NEED more of THOSE...right?
Correct, it will take YEARS, if not decades, for this economy to revive itself.
The same thing happened before. The government gave folks money before also...with a DIFFERENCE: They created REAL JOBS that were PRODUCTIVE and the recipients of the government paychecks had to WORK & EARN the money. It was'nt "just another give-away" entitlement program. It was the primary reasons our National Park system was refined and improved...remember the old CCC Camps? (Civilian Construction Corps).
They were the folks that worked for low wages but worked very hard and made our National Parks as accessable as they are today.
Speaking of the Parks: Nowadays they employ folks at higher wages and now say that some parks may close or have much restricted access by the public, which really owns the park system.
We have so many lessons in history that we COULD and SHOULD learn from.
However, in today's "instant gradification generation(s), working doesn't seem to be an option...the by words are "just show me the money"!
Well folks, the money is not ENDLESS.... and soon we will ALL feel the ramifications of trying to spend our way out of national debt or borrow our way out of debt. And WHAT FOR? To appease a decadent society that has become too damned lazy to work themselves out of a crisis but rather demand that the government DO SOMETHING to make their lives as easy as they were before any of this evolved into the mess it is today.
Sorry, I know you differ Joan, and others, but while I, personally, can't DO anything about it, I DO understand it from a conservative perspective, which doesn't allow me to have much sympathy for this current attemps to make things "better" when all I can see is it becoming worse and worse with each passing day.
I DO BELIEVE that this country will not only SURVIVE, but it will THRIVE again. But that result will NEVER be because of the tactics being employed NOW by this administration.
The GOP probably wouldn't fair much better.
I believe that in the end, it will be THE PEOPLE of this country that will cause this to pass.
When the ones that do NOT depend on the government to bail them out finally gather enough strength in numbers, the economy WILL improve and expand.
An example would the the Katrina mess.
Many along the Gulf Coast didn't "wait for government help", they rolled up their sleeves and finished the task themselves...long before the FEMA guys showed up with their money.
They took the money, but as a re-imbursment, not as a reason to START!
Shift to NO.
They sat and waited for the government to come and make things better.
Many parrishes are STILL crumbling. Debris is STILL heaped all over. Entire neighborhoods are condemned and unlivable.
The Gulf Coast folkls, for the most part, are and have been, back to "normal".
The NO folks? They, for the most part, are STILL living off of the government tit and frankly, I believe they have NO DESIRE, (beyond words and crocidile tears on camera), to go back to what was once considered "normal" for their lives. Why would they want to go back? They have a permanent source of money...YOURS AND MY money.
Granted, there ARE "exceptions" to that broard brush I just used, but the underlying principle and TRUTH still remain!
